Bring your family tree or register across
You do not have to start over. This page says plainly what Everjaar can do today and what it cannot yet.
What Everjaar does today
- An existing family register (a list of people, relationships and dates) can be loaded into an empty family space in one go with Everjaar’s import tool. For now that goes through us.
- Email hallo@everjaar.com with an example of your register and we will look at the approach together. The family space has to be empty for that.
- Adding people one by one always works, and relatives fill in their own details themselves.
What it cannot do yet
Uploading a GEDCOM file and importing it with one click is not in the app yet. This page makes no promise about when: as soon as it is, it will say so here.
Exporting a GEDCOM file
A GEDCOM file (.ged) is the common language of family tree programs. Keep one as a backup, even if you are not importing anything yet.
- MyHeritage: open your tree, choose Manage, then Export to GEDCOM.
- Ancestry: in your tree choose Tree Settings, then Export your tree.
- Aldfaer: choose File, then Export to GEDCOM.
- Gramps: choose Family Trees, Export, then GEDCOM.
Menu names differ by version; see your program’s help.
What to watch for
- Surnames with a prefix (“van der Berg”, “de Vries”): make sure the prefix does not end up in the first name, so sorting by surname works.
- Double surnames (“Jansen-de Vries”): note which one is the birth name.
- Incomplete dates (only a year or a month) stay incomplete; they are not filled in.
- After an import, living people appear on the calendar for the family only once they, or their parents, give consent; until then others see initials only.
